"Catherine Corrie first came to my attention when I bought her book Becoming Emotionally Intelligent. The school had already introduced training over a period of time on thinking skills and accelerated learning and staff were using strategies to support more effective learning and teaching in the school.

One of our key core values relates to raising pupils self esteem and when I read the first two pages in the first chapter of Cath's book I knew immediately that she was the person who could provide the next piece of the learning jigsaw for myself and my staff.

Cath provided a days training for staff last September and later that month an evening for parents. Around 50 parents turned up for the evening and they were so impressed that they have asked Cath to return for another session in the summer term.

Cath showed a profound and practical knowledge of emotional intelligence, combined with an intellectual rigour which left us all feeling we had been challenged in our own thinking. She was a catalyst for change and improvement in our understanding and practice.

I believe that Cath's work has been both beneficial for my staff and for the children we teach, as well as their parents. Importantly it has reinforced and supported our own commitment to our core values and helped to strengthen the ethos of our school. This was evidenced in our recent OfSTED in January 2004 were one of the main contributory factors to high standards in the school was the spiritual, moral and social development of the pupils, which OfSTED believes encourages confidence and high self esteem thereby sustaining positive approaches to learning."

"On 26th and 27th of June this year I was fortunate enough to attend an Emotional Intelligence training course which had been set up by the EAZ.

I say fortunate, because it turned out to be an incredible and uplifting experience that, for once, had nothing to do with the catering at Saltwells.

The course was led by Catherine Corrie and in her wonderful style she explained and illustrated EI. She taught us about:

  • How to improve your own EI.
  • The effect of internal and external environments.
  • Understanding and managing behaviour.
  • Fear and love.
  • Grief.
  • Motivation.
  • Self-esteem.
  • Identity.

'Of course!'&Mac226; I kept shouting in my head, 'I knew that!'&Mac226; and she made all sorts of sense.

So what did I learn about Emotional Intelligence? It's about how we think, feel and act with our emotional, mental and physical bodies and about how each factor can affect the others. It's about treating children at school exactly how we would wish our own children to be treated. To see them as whole people who are affected by whatever may be going on around them or inside them. It's about stopping and thinking about why a child is not behaving well or not reaching their full potential. Very few children choose to fail and therefore there is usually a reason why they do.

Everyone should learn more about EI. Everyone in the world should do this course. It was that good, I bought the book!

I would like to finish with a few words by William J Crocker. Does this sound like your school?

A People Place

If this is not the place where tears are understood, where do I go to cry?

If this is not a place where my spirits can take wing, where do I go to fly?

If this is not a place where my questions can be asked, where do I go to seek?

If this is not a place where my feelings can be heard, where do I go to speak?

If this is not a place where you&Mac226;ll accept me as I am, where can I go to be?

If this is not a place where I can try to and learn to grow, where can I just be me?"
